Soil Chemistry
Soil structure, root growth and plant health are strongly influenced by soil chemistry. Production of crops and pastures can be limited by nutrient deficiencies and toxicities, as well as by adverse values of other soil properties such as pH, mineralogy, cation exchange capacity, salinity and organic matter content. In most cases, conditions that restrict plant growth can be easily detected by soil testing and the results used to manage soil more effectively to support plant production. Whilst there is no wrong time to test soil, landholders may want to test just prior to a cropping program to ensure sufficient nutrients are available for the coming crop.
